The organization draws on the personal experiences of veterans to raise public awareness and advocate for peaceful alternatives to war. VFP's mission includes:
- Educating the public about the full cost of war
- Resisting militarism and working to end current wars
- Healing the wounds of war and building a just and peaceful society

History
Founded in 1985 by 10 U.S. veterans in response to the global nuclear arms race and U.S. military interventions in Central America, VFP rapidly grew, reaching over 8,000 members during the buildup to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. The organization now includes veteran and associate members in every U.S. state and several countries, with over 120 chapters, including international chapters in Vietnam, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Ireland. VFP holds a permanent Non-Governmental Organization seat at the United Nations and is the first military veterans’ organization invited to be a member of the International Peace Bureau based in Geneva, Switzerland.
